Development and piloting of a national continence training package for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Aged Care Workers, With Quintal, E & Stein, I. The aim of the project was to develop for accreditation at TAFE/Graduate Certificate level, a continence education package for indigenous health and aged care workers. The package was piloted at urban, rural and remote sites and presented along with recommendations for its national implementation. The expectation being that all indigenous health and aged care workers will eventually be given an opportunity to have accredited training in continence management. Outcomes of the project:
- Development of education pathways for the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health and aged care workers interested in promoting continence in their communities.
- Advocacy for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people who may be experiencing problems with incontinence.
- Localised community ownership.
- Partnership between mainstream health professionals and organisations.
- Accurate information dissemination to consumer and family networks.
The development of continence curriculum guidelines for inclusion in undergraduate nursing & midwifery curriculum with Glover, P, Thorogood, C, Turnball, B, Day, K, St John, W, Watt, E & Josephs, K. Project aimed to promote the inclusion of prevention of incontinence and promotion of continence in undergraduae nursing and midwifery curricula through the development of recommended continence guidelines/core elements. The project is being undertaken as part of the National Continence Management Strategy for the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care. A systematic collection and synthesis of pertinent data will inform the development of recommended guidelines for inclusion of continence into undergraduate nursing and midwifery curricula. The methods include: a literature review; survey of industry partner needs; collation of university responses to request for details of the continence content in their nursing and midwifery undergraduate curriculum; and consultation with leading overseas nursing experts to determine understanding of continence content in undergraduate curriculum in their respective countries.
Exploration of drug administration incidents at RGH with Alderman, C, Prendergast, J, Walsh, S, Farmer, C, Esterman, A, Ponniah, D, & Harper, V. This is a two stage project of audit and focus groups, the aim of which is to explore drug administration incidents and associated level of risk for patients at RGH Daw Park. The emphasis of the project is upon the manner in which clinical and management services and system failure may be contributing to or causing the incidents, rather than poor performance by individuals. The current method of reporting drug administration incidents within the hospital focuses on the individual and key nursing, pharmacy and medical staff are concerned that this focus has punitive connotations and contributes, along with other factors, to under-reporting of drug incidents.
Exploring the incidence of pressure ulcers at RGH with McErlean, B & Prendergast, J. This two stage project is designed to firstly determine the most accurate and efficient method of identifying a stage 1 ulcer and secondly determine which preventative interventions are most successful in reducing the progression of ulcer development.
Determining the reliability of the pressure risk assessment tool with McErlean, B & Prendergast, J.Professional and community engagement
