Look closer, see me: RNs' recognition of criminal injury through the eyes of the victim, PhD Thesis. Do registered nurses see people presenting with criminal injuries as patients or as victims of crime? What impact does this have on the management plan for that individual? This study will explore these questions from several perspectives. Firstly, through the eyes of the victim of crime. How do they perceive they have been classified in the system - what impact does this have on their case management and medico-legal outcomes? Case notes of victims will be analysed to determine if the nurses' documentation supports the patient's perception. That is, is there documented evidence the nurse has identified their patient as a victim of crime, has documented forensic evidence accordingly and the impact this may have had on the patient's management plan? Australian midwifery action project With Barclay, L, Reiger, K, Lane, K, Leap, N & Brodie, P. This ARC/SPIRT research will investigate barriers identified by industry to improve midwifery care within a climate of extensive policy change in maternity services. Problems to be investigated are increasing shortfalls in numbers of midwives, problems of educational preparation, and comparability of regulation and standards nationally. Action research will involve industry partners and researchers in collaboration to produce an urgently needed analysis of service delivery, educational, and policy and regulatory issues. The study will also develop processes to improve communication across sectors and analyse organisational links, and aims to galvanise improved sectoral collaboration in the long term. Snapshots in time: the importance of forensic photography in nursing practice. In a society of increasing criminal activity and interpersonal violence it is inevitable that nurses, particularly in accident and emergency units, will encounter victims and perpetrators with injuries as a sequel to these activities. This research aims to:
- establish the extent to which photography is used by registered nurses in dealing with accidental, civil, criminal liability-related injuries as a supplemental tool in documentation of patient injuries
- identify how many health care agencies have a written policy on forensic photography
- determine what Registered Nurses understand by the terms 'forensic photography' and 'evidence'
- determine how many health care agencies have an established forensic evidence procedure manual/policy.Professional and community engagement
